Grey Lynn Villa.
Kitchen Transformation.
Typical of homes from this era, this Grey Lynn villa had a 1990s rear extension fitted with a basic, budget-friendly kitchen—likely reflecting its past as a rental property. When our clients purchased the home, they set about transforming it into a warm and character-filled family residence.
A key part of the design brief was to ensure the new kitchen honoured the villa’s heritage while also offering smart, tailored functionality. Specific storage was created for their extensive collection of wine glasses, cleverly hidden in pull-out drawers concealed behind push-to-open cabinetry on the front of the island.
As the kitchen spans the entire rear of the home and flows directly into the dining and family areas, it was essential that the design be both beautiful and highly practical—perfect for everyday family life and frequent entertaining. The generous proportions of the space allowed us to incorporate statement appliances, including Sub-Zero refrigeration and a Wolf oven.
In keeping with the home’s heritage, we used recessed panel cabinetry and traditional-style handles. The combination of soft grey island cabinetry, white back wall units, and stat-vein quartz splashback delivers a timeless yet contemporary palette, grounded with a crisp white Corian benchtop for a clean finish.
A custom-designed wall unit was added at a later stage to further enhance storage and complete the space, both visually and functionally.
