Metropolis – Kitchen Renovation.
MCD was engaged to redesign the kitchen and lounge areas in one of Auckland’s most iconic addresses – the Metropolis apartment building.
The original kitchen was tucked away in a small, boxed-in room that felt dark and claustrophobic. The apartment featured three different flooring types – carpet, parquet timber, and kitchen tiles – which created a disjointed and tired aesthetic.
To open up the space, we removed all internal walls and designed a large, contemporary kitchen anchored by striking marble benchtops and an island. Black glass cabinetry was used to reflect the natural light flooding in from the exterior, creating a brighter, more expansive feel.
This refined palette was continued through to the bespoke entertainment unit and fireplace design. We laid solid oak flooring with a maple inlay throughout the kitchen and living areas – a subtle nod to the Art Deco heritage of the building. Durable and elegant, this flooring can easily withstand the wear of high heels, making it both beautiful and practical.
The result is a timeless, modern-Deco interior that complements the architectural significance of the Metropolis building.
